M: I got there at a quarter past twelve and waited a while. But I guess I left before you got there.

Q: When did the man probably leave the theatre?

12. W: Excuse me, sir, visiting hours are over. You must leave.

M: Pardon me, nurse. I didn't hear the bell or I would have left earlier.

Q: Why did the man apologize?

14. W: That's a good TV play, isn't it?

M: Hi, I got them, two tickets to the French painting exhibition.

W: Oh, really? How did you do it?

M: I went out at three in the morning and lined up. To my surprise, there were already a lot of people ahead of me.

W: Well, I'm glad you got them.

M: If you're free tomorrow, would you like to come with me?

W: Wonderful! Thank you very much.

M: Don't mention it. I know you're an art lover.

Part III. Passages

Listen to the following two passages and choose the best answer to each question. Each passage will be read twice.

Passage A

Joe, who spent the holiday on a farm, was a little boy from a town. He had never been to a farm before. The first morning he got up just before daylight to watch the farmer milk the cows. Then he wanted to help feed the other animals. The farmer gave him a lamb and told Joe he must take care of it, as its mother had died. Very soon the lamb would follow Joe all over the farm.

Joe also learned to feed chickens and collect eggs. He liked to look after pigs, too. Every day he enjoyed himself very much with the animals.

At last the day came when he had to go back home. That was a very sad day for him, as he felt sorry saying goodbye to all the animals on the farm.

Passage B

Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was set up in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks didn't work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system had to be set up. It had to be good enough to be used by many different computers.

In the early 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to use the network too, besides the government. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. By the early 1990s, computers became cheaper and easier to use. Scientists had also developed software that made “surfing” the Internet more convenient.

Today it is easy to get online and the Internet has become one of the most important parts of people's lives.
